LA JOLLA. This Tuscanesque cafe is as popular a hangout for surfers as it is with the more senior members of La Jolla society. Terra-cotta tiled floors, bottles of chianti, and a Roman fountain all contribute to the setting for an authentic Italian menu (translations provided). Highlights include gourmet wood oven-fired pizzas, Pappardelle "Fantasia," and Tagliolini con Funghi Arrabiato. A word to the wise ­ this place is extremely popular on the weekend, so come early.

POINT LOMA. This isn't your standard pizza parlor. The chic cafe with its salmon-colored walls, black tables and chairs, and open kitchen specializes in designer pizzas like Thai chicken, a gooey five-cheese variety, and grilled chicken pesto. You'll also find a traditional pepperoni pie and the eponymous version that boasts smoked salmon, red onion, capers and goat cheese. Many folks believe that Nova serves the best pizza in town. Other locations can be found in Hillcrest (619-296-6682) and in Solana Beach (858-259-0666).

GASLAMP QUARTER. Starched white linens and windows offering picturesque views of the Gaslamp Quarter serve as the backdrop for this authentic Italian restaurant. An open kitchen lets you observe the bustle to prepare top-quality food. Favorites include veal scaloppine with porcini mushrooms, and farfalline with smoked salmon in a light cream sauce with caviar. Other possibilities: tender steaks, fresh seafood and chicken dishes. Save room for one of the best desserts in town ­ an excellent tiramisu.
