DEL MAR. Arterra prides itself on using quality, seasonal produce to develop its outstanding recipes. Chefs are well-known among local farmers, ranchers and fisherfolk who provide goods exclusively for the restaurant's daily menus that feature contemporary seasonal cuisine that's American in nature. HILLCREST / BALBOA PARK. This funky neighborhood café serves up hearty breakfasts of French toast and eggs, but also offers a number of healthy vegetarian items. Super friendly owner and staff really make the experience memorable. A favorite with locals, who drop by for a cuppa joe and a chat, or a quick meal. A good place to take the kids. Whoopi Goldberg washed dishes here before becoming an international star.

PACIFIC BEACH. As you might guess from its name, this lovely café specializes in omelets perfectly prepared with a wide variety of ingredients. The famous dozen-egg omelet comes topped with chili and a pile of potatoes on the side - eat it all and you pay a fraction of the original price and win a free T-shirt! Of course, there are other options, like pancakes and waffles, and Mexican-style breakfast burritos.

GASLAMP QUARTER. A hip, spacious hangout, Café Lulu offers an art-infused environment and comfortable seating, not to mention excellent gourmet and specialty coffees and divine desserts and pastries. Late-night hours make the place an ideal destination when you're not ready to go home yet, and additional perks include Sunday night belly dancers and hookah pipes.
