DEL MAR. Arterra prides itself on using quality, seasonal produce to develop its outstanding recipes. Chefs are well-known among local farmers, ranchers and fisherfolk who provide goods exclusively for the restaurant's daily menus that feature contemporary seasonal cuisine that's American in nature. The restaurant also has a sushi menu as well as an extensive bar and wine menu. Diners have the option of indoor or outdoor seating, with great views of the surrounding countryside.

HILLCREST / BALBOA PARK. Bertrand at Mr. A's opulent decor is surpassed only by its stellar view of the coast. That, along with infallible service and fantastic food makes it a favorite for special occasion and celebration dinners (reservations are tough to get), although most would say any time is a good time to dine here. Baked oysters on the half shell with champagne sabayon, oven roasted bass with morel sauce, venison loin with crépinette, beef tenderloin with gorgonzola sauce are all prime examples of the kitchen's talents with traditional and more modern cooking.

HILLCREST / BALBOA PARK. This funky neighborhood café serves up hearty breakfasts of French toast and eggs, but also offers a number of healthy vegetarian items. Super friendly owner and staff really make the experience memorable. A favorite with locals, who drop by for a cuppa joe and a chat, or a quick meal. A good place to take the kids. Whoopi Goldberg washed dishes here before becoming an international star.

HILLCREST. A true cultural and culinary experience awaits at Bombay. The extensive and authentic menu of Indian cuisine includes meat and seafood dishes, along with a plethora of vegetarian ones. Curries, biryani and tandoori cooked meats and breads are specialties. All of the extras are offered as well ­ raita, several different chutneys, a range of freshly cooked breads, lassi and chai. The relaxing atmosphere, complete with Indian music, crisp white linens and a soothing water wall, make this a popular destination ­ reservations are strongly recommended.

HILLCREST / BALBOA PARK. A favorite among San Diego's breakfast crowd for their delectable muffins, pastries and gourmet coffees. Their sourdough baguettes and kalamata olive bread are area favorites.
